Fall Fell Felt
2018

Fall Fell Felt begins from an examination of “fail” videos, a popular genre where physical blunders and bloopers are caught on camera and disseminated online. Focusing on an extremely prevalent sub-genre, so-called “girl fails,” this project tests the ability of these images to elicit empathy, while considering the ways that women’s bodies been used throughout the history of moving images to provoke physical and visceral responses from viewers.

Blue Light Blue
2021

Blue Light Blue is a film and video work that uses the blue light emitted from the backlit LED screens of cellphones, tablets and laptops as a formal element, an experimental narrative device, and a primary material. The work draws aesthetic inspiration from horror films and the cinematic device of “day for night”—a technique used throughout the history of film where footage shot during daylight is processed with a strong blue tint so that it reads as nighttime. Throughout Blue Light Blue, the notions of day and night are confused and the protected, intimate space of the bedroom is transgressed. Blue light is cast as the antagonist in a pseudo horror film where screens masquerade as mirrors or windows or light sources, all the while surveilling us as we gaze into their simulated depths.

Love
2022

Love explores the shapeshifting nature of language on the internet. In the video, images extracted from the Instagram platform–all found under #love–are transformed and integrated with original footage shot by the artist. The work began as an Instagram residency with Dazibao in the summer of 2021. #love is the most used hashtag on Instagram and currently there are over 2 billion posts that are tagged in this way. Online, the meaning of a word can be morphed by the contexts in which it is found and the associated images it has accrued. If each of the 2 billion posts using #love provides a new context for the word, it becomes nearly impossible to determine any fixed meaning for the term. Connecting seemingly disparate images, Love tries to understand and link all of the possible associations of a given word at a single moment in time through narrative. A voiceless narrator—a loose personification of the Instagram platform or perhaps even the internet itself— addresses the viewer in the form of a love letter. They express an understanding of love and describe a relationship based around the diverse imagery and sometimes illogical associations created by #love.

Projections16mm film transferred to digital and 4k video, 16:13, 2026
Projections begins at a defunct 1960’s planetarium in Canada named after Queen Elizabeth II. A planetarium is, put simply, a domed surface upon which to project a representation of the cosmos for entertainment and educational purposes. In its exploration of projection as a both a delivery system for moving images and psychological process of imposing the internal on the external, Projections follows the history of projection, visiting La Ciotat, France, where the Lumière Brothers first projected their films, as well as the Cannes red carpet where tourists pose and imitate the “stars,” and finally a satellite station in Leuk, Switzerland where earthly communications are beamed into outerspace, possibly intercepted and surveilled along the way. Borrowing the format of a planetarium show, Projections is concerned with scale and the way that the very small often resembles the very large.
Projections is the first film in a 3-part series entitled Constellations which considers ways that humans engage with the stars both aesthetically and ideologically. Drawing a relationship between the cosmos and the internet, Constellations examines how, in the face of that which is vast and unknowable, (like the cosmos or the internet, for example), we look to see ourselves reflected back and attempt to project our identities out into the ether.

How to Chop an Onion
2016

This dual channel video installation involves the dissection, reconstruction and loose re-enactment of “how-to” videos found online. Rather than a straightforward re-presentation of what I’ve learned from these tutorials, the completed works function to abstract, decontextualize and distill the gestures culled from found instructional videos. Combining original and internet-sourced footage, there is an effort not only to mimic but also to manipulate and transform the actions depicted in the found images. Through framing, chroma-keying, and rotoscoping, these actions become disembodied and fragmented. Original footage, primarily of hands, interacts with found images, trying to touch, grasp and manipulate them in a very literal way.

With Outthrust Arm
2014
With Outthrust Arm collects tourist-shot videos from YouTube of the famed sculpture, Laocoön, in the Vatican Museum. Isolating and cutting out a single fragment from each video, the sculpture is broken into pieces, each animated by the shaking handheld movements of its camera operator.

Still Life

Cézanne’s Still Life with Skull is animated using sounds and video culled from YouTube in an attempt to translate the traditional painting genre into a contemporary image, albeit through motion.
